Tornadoes
These spinning clouds of dust and debris have wind speeds reaching 300 mph.tornadoes can flatten buildings as well as pick up cars and houses and toss them around like toys.Most tornadoes occur in the Midwestern United States.Everything in the path of a tornado is destroyed,yet areas nearby can be left untouched.On a single day in 1999,around 1,500 people were either killed or injured from tornadoes in Tornado Alley.
Earthquakes
People can do nothing to prevent or stop an earthquake.When the earth shakes,whole buildings can collapse,killing people and destroying property.A powerful earthquake shook Pakistan in October 2005,killing more than 73,000 people.Earthquakes can also cause tsunamis,which devastate coastal regions.
Volcanoes
The lava,steam and ash from volcanoes change the landscape and climate.In 1815,Mt.Tambora in Indonesia erupted,killing 92,000 people.The ash from the volcano affected the climate around the world,making it noticeably cooler.In the Northern Hemisphere,the climate change resulted in the worst food shortage of the century.Lava flows destroy property,but because they move very slowly at first,they rarely kill humans.
