THE last of three events aimed at strengthening the bond between expats and the local community was held Saturday.The events,organized by the Futian District Government and Shenzhen Daily,gave expats the chance to take part in activities with local residents that would be both recreational and a cultural experience.
Thirteen expats from eight countries gathered in the square of Huanggang residential community early in the day to play tai-chi softball,a popular form of exercise in China in which participants must perform tai chi while balancing a ball on a tennis racket.Afterwards,the participants were taken on a tour.
As a migrant city,Shenzhen is making efforts to promote a sense of community among its residents,part of this is to help expats learn more about Shenzhen.
Despite not being as adept at tai-chi softball as their Chinese counterparts,the expats all said they had a good time.
“It’s an interesting form of exercise,” said Anthony Prempeh,a Ghanian businessman,who tried his best to learn from the people around him.
The expats said they found the tour highly educational.
“The urban village was very impressive.It’s interesting to learn more about these special communities that are scattered throughout Shenzhen,they make you realize that this city isn’t all about high rises,” said British Caroline Quinn,who joined the tour with her husband and two daughters.
“I wish there were more similar cultural activities that enable expats and Chinese to mingle in a cultural setting,” suggested Quinn.
The trip to the urban village enabled participants to learn about Shenzhen’s past,but the trip to the Kerry Plaza,a high-end office building in central Futian,was all about the present.After arriving at the building,they climbed to the 41st floor and enjoyed the panoramic view of Futian’s Central Business District.
The expats were told with much pride that the building employs green technology and recycles its water.It is reportedly the most expensive office building in the city.
The expats also toured Coco Park,a large shopping mall and entertainment hub in central Futian; and the Lianhua Hill Park,one of the best places in Shenzhen at which to enjoy the great outdoors,and located a walking distance away from the central business district.
“I liked Lianhua Hill Park most.If it weren’t the CBD skyline in the background,I would have felt as if I was deep in the countryside,” said Karsten Alt,a German designer.
“The city space,especially in the CBD,is still too ‘open,’ — the space is too big and not in human proportion.If the city space has a higher density and more human scale proportion,the city will be more vibrant,active and cultural,which is very important for a city center,” said Alt.
