in the world those readers really want.这里的 ,combined ..,是做定语

这两个形式我实在不知道怎么区分

是定语还是状语,没有什么固定的原则,关键是看句意,看懂句子意思就知道了.
第一句：很难过地说,这个项目的成果不过就是一些低水平的发现,发现了一些事实错误、拼写和语法错误,以及很多让人抓破脑袋的费解之处（.）.
——这里的combined with显然是与前面的errors and mistakes并列的,只是用了一个后置定语的方式把它们连接起来.如果是做状语的话,就得修饰主语（注意是整个句子的主语,不是某个分句的主语）,而且是说明主语的一个动作或者状态.这里的主语是this project,你自己试试看,如果是project combined with puzzlement... 显然意思不通.
第二句：如果新闻界确实注意到了这个问题的重要性,就不会像现在这样把注意力集中在人种和性别上,而会启动一个多样化项目,用来寻找不论是外貌、价值观、教育程度,还是社会阶层都相差迥异的记者们.
——这个句子的主语是it,谓语有两个,相互并列：would open... and look for... 之所以focused on... 是状语而不是定语,是因为它修饰的是整句话的主语,说明了主语的动作状态.如果你把它看成diversity program的后置定语,那意思就不对了.并不是diversity program在focuse on race and gender,而是the journalism目前在focus on... 开设diversity program是journalism接下来应该做的事.
